Tegal
Indonesia

Tegal is home to approximately 1.6 million people and plays a key role in regional trade and fisheries. Like many coastal regions, Tegal faces challenges with waste management, particularly plastic pollution affecting waterways and marine ecosystems.

Tegal Joins CLOCC Initiative to Strengthen Waste Management

In May 2024, Tegal Regency became the latest region in Indonesia to join the CLOCC programme, following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Indonesia Solid Waste Association (InSWA) and the Local Government of Tegal Regency. The agreement marks a significant step toward improving waste management and reducing plastic pollution in the region.

The CLOCC initiative in Tegal will focus on preventing and significantly reducing marine litter and plastic waste by enhancing the capacity of local government agencies, waste management operators, and community stakeholders. The goal is to develop an integrated and sustainable waste management system, ensuring long-term environmental benefits for the region. Tegal is the third regency in Indonesia to join the CLOCC initiative, following the success of Banyuwangi and Tabanan. Located on the north coast of Central Java, Tegal is home to approximately 1.6 million people and plays a key role in regional trade and fisheries. However, like many coastal regions, Tegal faces challenges with waste management, particularly plastic pollution affecting waterways and marine ecosystems.

Following the model of previous CLOCC regions, Tegal will begin its journey with a comprehensive waste management master plan. This plan will outline the guiding principles for scaling up waste collection, recycling infrastructure, and treatment systems, setting a foundation for long-term waste management improvements.

Developing this master plan will require intensive collaboration between local authorities, waste management professionals, community groups, and businesses. Following the principles of Integrated Sustainable Waste Management, the plan will ensure an inclusive and effective approach tailored to Tegal’s specific challenges and opportunities.

Over the next 14 months, InSWA will oversee and support the process, ensuring the successful implementation of this critical initiative by implementing the waste masterplan and improving waste management in 7 towns simultaneously.

By joining the CLOCC initiative, Tegal is taking a significant step toward a cleaner and healthier environment. Through structured planning, community engagement, and improved waste infrastructure, the region is paving the way for a more sustainable future—reducing plastic pollution and protecting its coastal ecosystems for generations to come.
