Providing Waste Services for 14,000 Households in Banyuwangi
Through the Rijig Pradana Wetan (RPW) initiative, the CLOCC programme is working with 14 rural municipalities in Banyuwangi to combat the issue of plastic waste leakage into the environment. This initiative not only addresses ocean pollution but also seeks to enhance waste management systems on land by focusing on community engagement and long-term sustainability.
We are delighted to share that the programme is now providing essential waste collection services to over 14,000 households. It has been estimated that this has successfully led to preventing 42.9 tonnes of waste from entering the environment every single day. Over 65,000 households have received education on how to properly separate waste at home, whilst TPSRs have created to 100+ local jobs.

5 years after CLOCC launched, these results show that the efforts of everyone involved are already having a profound impact on the communities it has been set up for and with. The success is built on the foundation of empowering local communities to take charge of their waste, ensuring that solutions are sustainable and tailored to meet the specific needs of each village. Community-focused approaches are crucial in tapping into local knowledge, fostering ownership, and encouraging long-term behavioural change.
In Banyuwangi, this has meant working with local leaders, waste collectors, and residents to create systems that are not only efficient but also foster responsibility and environmental stewardship within the community.
What is special and unique about this approach is that Banyuwangi can serve as a model for other rural communities in the region facing similar waste management challenges. By demonstrating that even basic services can have a significant impact when driven by community involvement, the programme offers a scalable and replicable blueprint for tackling plastic pollution and improving waste management across Indonesia and beyond.
CLOCC Villages Collaborate on Residual waste Transportion with Banyuwangi Local Government.
During an event in September, Six villages, all part of the CLOCC and RPW Village Assistance Programme, agreed to work with the Banyuwangi Regency to formalize the collection and transportation or residual waste, one of the key pillars of the the Banyuwangi Waste Master Plan. The villages are Purwodadi, Setail, Glagah, Sidodadi, Segobang, and Tamansari.
During the event, an agreement was established that set out a framework for effective and decentralised waste management, with a goal to manage 70% of waste directly at the village level. This decentralised approach will ensure that local communities are empowered to take ownership in the waste reduction, separation and collection at a village level. The Department of Community & Village Empowerment (DPMD) and UPT Head Mr. Amrullah underscored the benefits of reducing waste at the source.
With support from local leaders and waste management representatives, the collaboration between these villages and the Environmental Service UPT establishes an impactful step towards Banyuwangi's sustainable waste management goals as outlined in the waste masterplan.
Waste Management Infrastructure Boost: Handover of Containers and Three-Wheeled Motorbikes
To strengthen waste management infrastructure in the villages of Banyuwangi supported by the CLOCC Programme, RPW, in collaboration with the Banyuwangi Regency Department of Environment and Department of Community & Village Empowerment, organized a handover event at the RPW office earlier this year.
This effort provided six three-wheeled motorbikes for waste collection to Bakungan, Sidodadi, Purwodadi, and Glagah villages. Additionally, six waste containers were allocated to Purwodadi, Setail, Bakungan, Segobang, Tembokrejo, and Tamansari villages to aid in transporting residual waste.
The event marks the beginning of a cooperation agreement between the RPW-assisted villages and the UPT Environmental Service of Banyuwangi Regency to formalize the ongoing management of residual waste transportation.
