Launch of Waste MasterPlan for Chengalpattu District


On November 25, 2024, the Waste Masterplan for Chengalpattu District, Tamil Nadu, was launched at an official ceremony at the office of District Collector Thiru. S. Arunraj IAS. This milestone marks the beginning of a transformative journey in waste management, attended by key stakeholders, including Runar Bålsrud (CEO, Sirk Norge), Oda Kristin Korneliussen (CLOCC Program Manager, Sirk Noge), and Aditi Ramola (Technical Director, ISWA), alongside Hand in Hand India's Sustainable Waste Management team.


The event consider the critical collaboration between local and central government, as well as the private sector and all stakeholders to tackle the vast waste challenges outlined by the initial baseline assessment conducted by the CLOCC team.



A follow-up gathering on November 26, 2024, focused on actionable steps, funding solutions, and long-term sustainability to ensure effective implementation.

 

The Masterplan aims to address Chengalpattu's unique challenges—stemming from its 2.8 million residents and complex waste systems—by focusing on:

  • Addressing residual waste through locally tailored solutions, such as energy recovery.


This initiative empowers communities to take ownership of their waste, fostering a cleaner environment, healthier economy, and engaged citizens.
